Angels rough up Peavy, Padres 8-4

Jake Peavy started the 1st inning trying to work on the command of his fastball, but after giving up 4 runs on 4 hits to the Angels, he decided it was time he stopped fooling around.

The next 2 innings of work, he held the Angels hitless while striking out three. "I couldn't let some of those guys go to bed tonight thinking, 'Man, he's kind of flat,'" Peavy said.

Glendon Rusch had an impressive outing today, going 3 innings, giving up just 1 hit and striking out 4. His spring ERA is an impressive 1.35.

Offensively for the Padres, outfielder Jody Gerut hit his first HR of the spring, a solo shot in the 1st inning off starter Jered Weaver. Colt Morton also got his first of the Spring, a 3-run shot in the 8th inning off reliever Kasey Olenberger. Chase Headley finished his day going 1-for-3, his batting average currently sits at .409.

Up next for the Padres, they'll head to Scottsdale to take on the San Francisco Giants. The Padres will have 6'10" right-hander Chris Young on the mound against 2nd year right-hander Tim Lincecum. Game time is 1:05pm.

Rangers quiet Padres offense 5-2

In the first night game of the spring training schedule, the Padres offense was finally quieted, this time by the Texas Rangers in a 5-2 loss on Monday night.

Justin Germano got the start for the Friars, throwing 4 shutout innings, giving up just 2 hits. He looked like he did through his first 5 starts in 2007, going 5-0 to start the season. The Padres offense, however, didn't help out much tonight.

The Padres got on the board first when Scott Hairston was hit by a pitch. Hairston would proceed to steal 2nd, advance to 3rd on a sac fly by Tadahito Iguchi and would then score on a wild pitch to Kevin Kouzmanoff for a 1-0 Padres lead.

The lead would hold up until the 5th inning, when the Rangers scored 3 runs off left-hander Shawn Estes, they would add 1 more in the 7th and 1 in the 8th for a 5-1 lead. The Padres would get 1 of those runs back in the bottom half of the 8th on back-to-back doubles by Paul McAnulty and Jody Gerut.

Some of the team, including 1st baseman Adrian Gonzalez and closer Trevor Hoffman, will pack their bags tonight for an early morning flight bound for Beijing, China. The rest of the team will remain in Peoria to face the Los Angeles Angels tomorrow afternoon at 1:05pm.

On Friday and Saturday night, the Padres will face the Los Angeles Dodgers from Beijing, China. Padres Channel 4 will have the coverage starting at 10pm PST on both nights.

The Minor League Report with Denis Savage

Denis Savage of Mad Friars stopped by for our first official segment of "The Minor League Report."

Todd Kaufmann: With the way Chase Headley is playing, do you think he should be the starting left fielder for the San Diego Padres?

Denis Savage: I do believe he deserves a shot based on his offense but also believe he should get some more looks at left field in Portland to continue shoring up his defense. Asking him to be major league ready at the position with only 20 games under his belt may be a bit much to ask.

Todd Kaufmann: What's your take on Wade LeBlanc? He's been opening a lot of eyes, especially those of Padres' manager Bud Black. Is it too much for him to be thrust into the #5 spot in the Padres rotation this soon or do you think he can handle it?

Denis Savage: I think he can handle it. He has a mature approach, is very cerebral and will not be awed by the competition level.

Todd Kaufmann: The Padres released their contingent for the China trip, are you surprised at any of the names on that list and who, out of the young prospects, will get the most out of this trip in your opinion?

Denis Savage: I think this is a mistake. Players only get a certain amount of time to prepare for the year and while the pitchers may stay on track, the hitters will suffer. I am not sure I would send some of those guys and it will bear watching if they have a slow start to the year. As for who goes or stays, I am not surprised by any and I still believe they may get the trip of a lifetime but at what cost to their season?

Todd Kaufmann: Brian Myrow won the PCL Batting Title in 2007 with a .354 average. Is he a player the Padres should consider as a bench player or will they start him in AAA Portland to make sure he keeps a starting role so he stays fresh? I can't imagine they can ignore a guy like Myrow for long, especially not at a .354 clip.

Denis Savage: He has too many hills to climb to secure a bench spot. If injury occurs, however, Myrow is a fit. You can’t doubt the success he has had.

Todd Kaufmann: Kyle Blanks is a prospect that the organization is very high on, but he's blocked at first base my Adrian Gonzalez. Is he going to be another Chase Headley, where they want to see if they can make a position change with him?

Denis Savage: No way. How many 280-pound players have you seen in the outfield? It won’t happen. I expect they will eventually look to trade him.

Padres' roster released for Beijing trip

The San Diego Padres have released the names that will fly to China for a week for exhibition games against the Los Angeles Dodgers. It will consist of both veterans as well as young prospects.

8-run outburst helps Padres over White Sox

The Padres finally got the kind of outing they've been waiting for out of left-hander Randy Wolf on Sunday. Wolf hadn't been able to get out of the first inning his first 2 outings, but this time finished all 3 of his scheduled innings, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits.

It was the offense that provided the biggest burst for San Diego. Kevin Kouzmanoff finally got his first HR of the spring, a 2-run shot off starter Jose Contreras in the 1st inning. Adrian Gonzalez, who had 2 hits today, along with Josh Bard and Paul McAnulty all had consecutive RBI singles in the 5 inning.

Wade LeBlanc looked impressive once again, giving up just 1 run in 3 innings of work, furthering the thought that he could be a dark horse for the #5 spot in the Padres rotation.

On Monday, San Diego will be in Peoria to face the Texas Rangers. Right-hander Justin Germano will get one last start before heading to China. Game time will be 7:05pm.

Maddux sharp again, Headley continues hot spring

Greg Maddux impressed yet again, though this time he did give up 1 run through 3 innings of work...yeah, another ho-hum afternoon for the soon to be 42-year-old right-hander.

Offensively for the Padres, young prospect Chase Headley continued his hot spring. He went 2-for-3 with a HR and a triple, driving in 3. Tony Clark hit his first HR of the spring, a 2-run shot in the 1st inning, as did Craig Stansberry in the 8th inning.

An injury note for San Diego, outfielder Vincent Sinisi, one of the Padres best outfield prospects, fractured his wrist diving for a fly ball. There's no time table on his return.

Up next for San Diego, the will be in Peoria to face the Chicago White Sox. Left-hander Randy Wolf will try to shake off 2 straight bad outings when he gets the start, the White Sox will counter with Jose Contreras.
